翻译练习9 A

Youve been in love, of course! If not youve got it to come. Love is like measles; we all have to go through it. Also like the measles, we take only once. One never need be afraid of catching it a second time. The man who has had it can go into the most dangerous places, and play the most foolhardy tricks with perfect safety. He can, to see the last of a friend, venture into the very jaws of the marriage ceremony itself. He can keep his head through the whirl of a ravishing waltz, and rest afterwards in a dark conservatory, catching nothing more lasting than a cold.

No, we never sicken with love twice. Cupid spends no second arrow on the same heart. Loves handmaids are our life-long friends. Respect, and Admiration, and Affection, our doors may always be left open for, but their great celestial master, in his royal progress, pays but one visit, and departs. Meteor-like, it blazes for a moment and lights with its glory the whole world beneath. Happy those who, hastening down again eer it dies out, can kindle their earthly altars at its flame. Love is too pure a light a burn long among the noisome gases that we breathe, but before it is chocked out we may use it as a torch to ignite the cozy fire of affection. B

The media factor figures prominently in the interactions between China and the West. Balanced reporting is crucially important, given the significance of the media in Western societies and global public opinion. Now that China is increasingly open to the world and very much in the limelight, the media has unique role to play in promoting mutual understanding between China and the world. I agree with many British friends who believe that China should engage directly with the Western media and the Western Public, to make Chinas voices heard across the many platforms of the Western media.

翻译练习10

Who can say in what remoteness of time, in what difference of earthly shape, love first come to us as a stranger in the jungle? We, in our human family, know him through dependence in childhood, through possession in youth, through sorrow and loss in their season. In childhood we are happy to receive; it is the first opening of love. In youth we take and give, dedicate and possessrapture and anguish are mingled, until parenthood brings a dedication that, to be happy, must ask for no return. All these are new horizons of content, which the lust of holding, the enemy of love, slowly contaminates. Loss, sorrow and separation come, sickness and death; possession, that tormented us, is nothing in our hands; it vanishes. Loves elusive enchantment, his ubiquitous presence, again become apparent; and in age we may reach a haven that asking for nothing knows how to enjoy.

Shortly afterwards, the ruined capital was reconstructed and renamed Beijing, the North Capital, known to Westerners as Peking. It has been, except for two short intervals, the capital of China ever since. The Peking up till the liberation in 1949, as the capital of an absolute monarchy, took its final shape in the year 1553, after three successive large-scale alterations. The reconstruction in 1553 added an outer city to the original square city, thus lengthened the principal axis of the city to eight kilometers. The composition of the entire city was basically symmetrical. The street system was laid out with that of the Mongol city as basis. The chessboard main streets divide the city into large super-blocks, within which most of the minor streets run in the east-west direction. This “fish-bone pattern of street system defines clearly the different functions of the major and minor streets on the one hand and enabled all the houses to have a southern exposure on the other. The planner had shown great ingenuity in the creation of such a system.

Every successful business is built on superior sensesof timing, opportunity, responsibility, and, not infrequently, humor. None, however, is more critical than the ability to sense the market. A senior executive’s’ instinctive capacity to empathize with and gain insights from customers is the single most important skill he or she can use to direct technologies, product and service offerings, indeed, all elements of a companys strategic posture. People like Bill Gates brought this ability to the enterprises they founded. Without it, their ventures might have been short-lived or at least far less successful. But many top-level managers, particularly those at industrial companies, consider customer contact the bailiwick of sales and marketing staff. And if they do believe that market focus is a priority, most retain only limited contact with consumers as their organizations grow, relying instead on subordinates reportssecond-or-third-hand informationto define and sense the market for them.
